While some games require payment to gain access to, most websites allow visitors to play free games, with the costs being shouldered by other means such as advertising.
There are literally thousands of websites where you can play free games. These websites either host their own games or those from third party game developers. With the use of Flash and Java technology, online games now feature streaming audio and video, as well as placing game interactivity at a whole new level. Aside from online games that utilize standalone software, the number of browser-based online games has grown tremendously for the past ten years or so. The popularity of online games is fueled by the ability to connect multiple players, particularly those found in social networking sites. The following are descriptions of several online game genres:
- Action games. These games focus on hurdling physical challenges with the use of hand-eye coordination and reaction time of the player. The player usually has an avatar which he uses to navigate around the game environment. Objectives of the game might include collecting objects, avoiding obstacles, and facing opponents (usually computer-controlled).
- Role-playing games. Popularly known as RPGs, these games has its roots from classic pen-and-paper role playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons. Just like its predecessor, players navigate through the game by controlling a character whose actions, behavior, and abilities may be dictated by its role. For example, a player assuming the role of a wizard can only use items and abilities applicable to its class. In addition, RPGs may follow a storyline and may involve the completion of missions or quests in order to progress in the game.
- Vehicle simulation. These games allow a player to control an assortment of conventional or fictional vehicles such as cars, trains, ships, aircraft, spaceships, robots, motorcycles, and race cars. The primary challenge for the player is to gain mastery in operating the vehicle and accomplishing a set of objectives. Examples of these games include flight simulation, racing games, vehicle combat simulators, train simulators, space flight games, and boat racing.
